On Becoming a Radiant Being
Transforming Adversity into Triumph, Love, and Purpose
The sun never asks permission to shine. Neither should you.
Dr. Reuben built the sort of life that looks impressive from the outside: elite college athlete, activist, clinical psychologist, entrepreneur, and speaker.
At the same time he was building something else, silently and at great cost: an insidious addiction to the approval of others.
On Becoming a Radiant Being is the story of what it took to break the pattern of permission that defined his life.
A childhood shaped by family upheaval and displacement. The pressures of Division I football, campus activism during a moment of national reckoning, and the ceaseless grind of graduate school. Then, a cancer diagnosis that forced him to finally stop performing and start listening to himself.
With the clarity of hindsight, Dr. Reuben traces each adversity back to the same invitation: become who you actually are.
Psychologically grounded, luminous, and unflinchingly honest, this memoir is for anyone who has ever achieved their way to emptiness, and is ready, finally, to trade hollow success for something real.
Meet the Author
Dr. Reuben is a licensed psychologist, consultant, and speaker who has spent his career helping ambitious, high performers—athletes, entertainers, business owners, executives, and emerging leaders—confront psychological wounds, conflict, and change. But before he was helping others make sense of their greatest challenges, he was living through his own.
After his football career at the University of Georgia ended, he found his way to psychology at the University of Missouri, where a deeply fractured campus became the unlikely proving ground for the work he'd spend the rest of his life doing: helping people and groups find their way back to each other.
Today, through his boutique practice and consulting firm, Dr. Reuben continues that work with the leaders and organizations he serves. This is the story of how he got there.
