Therapy with Dr. Reuben: “What’s it like?”
“What the hell am I getting myself into?” you might ask.
Well, I’m going to tell you, what you can expect from therapy, particularly with me—Dr. Reuben.
Assuming you've read the therapy services page (link), you will know that I’m a psychologist working with high performers who are navigating trauma, anxiety, and depression. I am licensed in the state of Florida, but practice in most states as member of PsychPact. Most importantly, I believe I am answering a Divine call. More about that in a later post…stay tuned.
As a person, I’d describe myself as laid-back, light hearted, passionate, candid, energizing, authentic, values aligned, and goal driven. These personality traits matter, because I bring my full self to my professional work as a psychologist. If you want a human robot (or AI), I’m the exact opposite of that—run now! ☺ If you want to partner with a highly skilled, helping professional with immaculate vibes, you’re moving in the right direction.
There are three main phases of my therapy work: Intake, Growth, and Maintenance.
#1: Intake:
Every client relationship begins with a brief 15–30-minute consultation, typically by phone. This complimentary conversation lets us vibe each other out. I'll ask what brings you to therapy and share an overview of the process; you'll have space for your own questions. By the end of the call, we'll know whether to move forward, whether you need time to consider your options, or whether you'd be better served elsewhere. My goal is always to get you what you need, even if that means not working with me.
If we're a good fit, you'll complete brief intake paperwork, then I'll send scheduling links (virtual clients get secure video access; concierge clients and I coordinate location and travel by phone or email).
At the first appointment, I'll complete a clinical assessment covering your childhood, relationships, habits, work, and hopes for the future. We'll close by naming 2–3 therapy goals and settling on a meeting cadence.
#2: Growth
This is where the magic happens. We'll meet for 8–12 sessions to work toward your goals, usually weekly at first, then biweekly as we build rapport and you gain footing. You'll likely receive the "Therapy Starter Pack" (link) to prepare. The big picture: get you thinking, feeling, and behaving differently to get different results in your life. Around session 6–8, we'll check progress and adjust the plan—sometimes staying the course, sometimes fine-tuning goals or bringing in outside providers (e.g. psychiatrists, PCPs, nutritionists, personal trainers, etc.).
#3: Maintenance
In the best case, you build high levels of insight and skill and grow into the best version of yourself. Some clients taper to monthly check-ins; others wrap up entirely. Both are right answers. I've had clients for 89 sessions over 4 years, and others who got what they needed in one or two. What matters most is that you feel confident living your life with the tools you've gained. And if old or new challenges show up later, I’ll be here to remind you of the skills you learned—just reach out.
